Notes
‘The heads themselves? I had been in Tuscany with my family for three months and had done drawings based on a Giotto in Santa Croce. At a certain point I cut up the drawing to rearrange the figures. And had on the studio floor dismembered fragments of bodies and heads, waiting to be reconstituted. Also in Florence that year was an exhibition of sculpture which included Tony Cragg’s wonderful beet heads, bronze casts of beetroots with crude faces carved into them. The print became a combination of Giotto, Cragg and 1980s South Africa.’1
