Michael J Allard, known as ‘Mick’, was born in 1950 in England, grew up in Zimbabwe and studied at Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town. Said to have always had a mischievous glint in his eye and a great sense of creativity, Allard has become well-renowned through his playful and humorous paintings of African wildlife. The present lot was ‘a large commission, and took a good deal longer to paint than many of my earlier works. I felt it important to incorporate as many animals and insects as possible to intrigue the viewer, and it was fun trying to hide some discreetly away. Whilst the deer looks somewhat vulnerable, in reality the leopard would not have stood a chance – the deer would have been gone in a flash.’1
