"Stephanus Johannes Paulus (Paul) Kruger (1825-1904) was the last President of the Zuid-Afikaanse Republiek (1882-1900). The earliest this linocut could have been published was in 1921 in Die Burger Nuwejaarsnommer 1921. Pierneef was very young when President Kruger left the country; therefore the work was almost certainly done from photographs". De Kamper and De Klerk, ibid, page 184.
