About this Item
Often described as the South African equivalent of a Grand Cru or First Growth, Kanonkop Estate is situated on the Simonsberg mountain slopes on the outskirts of Stellenbosch. Owned by the fourth generation Krige family, Abri Beeslaar is their long-term winemaker who has won International Winemaker of the year an incredible 3 times.
The Cabernet Sauvignon forms part of the 3-tiered, reds only fine offering under the Kanonkop label. Renowned for decades of ageing, Kanonkop’s Cabernet Sauvignon is austere when young and ages with grace.

Critics Ratings
'Is there a better value Cabernet Sauvignon than this in the southern hemisphere? It's certainly a contender for the top spot at under £20 in the UK. Judiciously oaked and refreshing, this has polished tannins, notes of mint, green tea and sweet spices and very pure, almost transparent, cassis-scented Cabernet fruit, with a long, lingering finish. Drink: 2013-20' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2013, 95/100
‘One of SA’s most celebrated examples, 2009 will no doubt blossom in years to come but currently serious oaking (23 months French, 50% new) makes it inscrutable, less approachable than 2008 (4.5 stars). Medium to full bodied, essentially savoury & classically styled.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide, 4* (2013)
‘(100% cabernet sauvignon; aged for 25 months in French oak, 50% new): Good full ruby-red. Sexy aromas of black raspberry, bitter cherry, coffee and game are lifted by a floral topnote. Broad, silky and quite dry, with bright acidity enlivening the flavors of dark fruits, leather and game. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and excellent length. This has plenty of development ahead of it. A superb wine from a terrific vintage.’ - Stephen Tanzer, Vinous.com, 91+/100 (May 2013)
'Hints of purple flower, cocoa powder and licorice add depth to the black cherry and berry core. The medium-weight palate is lush and fruity, with fine yet structured tannins that provide a crushed-satin texture. The nuanced finish offers delicate suggestions of black tea and bittersweet chocolate.' - Lauren Buzzeo, Wine Enthusiast, 90/100 (Jul 2014)
