About this Item
Thorne & Daughters Wines was started in 2012 by John and Tasha Seccombe with the aim to produce authentic wines in the beautiful Western Cape. John works with grapes from all over the Cape and seems to have a particularly refined aesthetic when it comes to winemaking. His Thorne and Daughters family concern is truly pushing the boundaries with old vines and simple, natural winemaking.
All Thorne & Daughters wines take their names from archetypal children’s toys, and Tin Soldier takes its name from Semillon’s status as the old foot soldier of the South African industry. Much like the old toy soldiers buried in the garden, Semillon has been reduced to a mere shadow of its former glory days in the Cape.

Critics Ratings
'Coppery brilliance on skin-fermented Semillon Blanc and Gris. 2015 pure, focused, and textured; mere whiffs of honey, orange peel. Densely layered and bone-dry, demands time & food.’ – Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2017, 4*
‘Tin Soldier wasn’t made in 2014, but it’s back with all flags flying in 2015, marrying Semillon Gris and Semillon Blanc from the Swartland and Franschhoek. A little skin contact adds colour and tannin here, but avoids being “the full orange”, according to John Seccombe. Orange peel, dried herbs and a bitter twist are supported by remarkable freshness, focus and minerality.’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2016, 93/100
