About this Item
Notes
Lindeni Dladla brought approximately 25 years of experience to the Threads of Africa Project, having worked with the Mdukatshani Crafts Project since her teens. Threads of Africa is a collaboration which started in 2005 with the Mdukatshani Development Trust. Based in the Thukela Valley of KwaZulu Natal, and paying tribute to the age-old tradition of working metal in Africa, weavers work from home, hand-weaving fine copper, brass, silver and shakudo to form vessels and bangles.
Each Threads of Africa bowl has its own unique pattern. Weavers hand-coil fine wire around a clay pot, which is used as a mould and broken out carefully once the form is complete. The patterns are developed from age-old weaving techniques used in the region, inspired by the rich landscape and history of KwaZulu Natal.
