About this Item

2015 Iron Syrah
6 (1 x 6) 750ml

Established in 2007 by the dynamic husband-and-wife team, Chris and Andrea Mullineux have, in a very short space of time, established Mullineux as one of South Africa’s most celebrated producers. Their track record speaks for itself: Awarded Wine Enthusiast’s International Winemaker of the Year in 2016, Tim Atkin’s SA Winemakers of the Year in 2017 and Five times Platter's Winery of the Year (2014, 2016, 2019, 2020, 2023).

Grapes for the Iron Syrah are sourced from a single parcel of 19 year old organically farmed dry land bush vines on the rolling hills with iron-rich soils west of Malmesbury. This parcel of Syrah gives the best expression of the “koffieklip” terroir – broadness and mid-palate.

Critics Ratings

'Dryland vineyard in Malmesbury hills with iron-rich koffieklip soil, giving distinctive ferrous/savoury nuance to 2015. Silky dark fruit, notes of scrub & white pepper, good tannin framework. Masterly balance, sleek & poised,'. - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2018, 4.5* (93/100)

'The 2015 Iron Syrah comes from vineyards around Malmesbury and has a very fruit-driven bouquet of raspberry coulis, red currant and wild strawberry; touches of tobacco and wet clay emerge with time. The taut, linear palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp acidity and fine precision on an almost Cornas-like finish that grips the mouth. Very promising.' - Neal Martin, Vinous, 91/100 (Aug 2018)

'Still youthfully compact, but the core of plum, blackberry and black currant fruit shows lots of juicy energy. Black tea, charcoal and singed alder notes flow through the finish. Needs time to stretch out fully. Best from 2019 through 2026.'- James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 93/100 (Jan 2018)

'Tricky to pick this may be, as it can get over-ripe in hot years, but the Mullineux nailed this in 2015. Grown on blood red soils, it’s a dense, rich, powerful wine with plenty of tannins, edging towards a Cornas in style. The effort was worth it. 2019-28.' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2017, 96/100
