About this Item
Run by Tania and Willi de Waal today, Scali Wines is located on the Schoone Oord farm which Willie’s great-great grandfather bought in 1877 (with the proceeds of a diamond he discovered at Kimberley in the Northern Cape!) The name ‘Scali’ is the Afrikaans term for ‘shale’, the predominant soil type in the Paardeberg. From a winemaking family, Willie continued the family tradition on Schoone Oord and passed the estate on to Tania and Willi, fifth generation grape growers. Starting small in 1993, the quality of the 1997 Pinotage was so exceptional they decided to scale up produced and released their first official vintage in 1999. Jamie Goode writes, ‘winemaking is as simple as it comes here; most of the effort takes place in the vineyard to get the grapes just right.’

Critics Ratings
‘Very youthful 2015 intense black fruit, black pepper and tar. Stylistically on the riper side; fruit density enlivened by slight stemminess, fine powdery tannin.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2017
