Notes
In 1988, Gerard Sekoto refers to a similarly themed painting to the present lot which gives great insight into the reasons for the artist’s choice of subject at the time. “This painting must have been done during that period when I felt rather unstable in mind, lacking the right place in which to work whilst at the same time trying as much as possible not to be caught up and taken directly into any of the particular schools of painting... Here also I tried taking my thoughts as far back as possible to the years I lived on the farm. Thinking of the round huts and the red earth. These I used to make it look quite African and far away from that which could have threatened to enclose me.”1
