the circular disc engraved with a presentation inscription in Latin to Benjamin Parsons Symons S T B, 16 June 1831, fitted to a Sheffield-plate mount applied with fruiting vine and flowerhead borders, raised on three shell and paw feet, 925g weighable silver, 44cm diameter

Notes

The inscription commemorates the election of Benjamin Parsons Symons (1785-1878) as the Warden of Wadham College, Oxford on 16 June 1831. He was a Doctor of Divinity and later became Vice-Chancellor of the University.

The inscription reads 'BENJAMINO PARSONS SYMONS S.T.B. COLLEGII WADHAMI PER XX ANNOS SOCTO AC TUTORI NUNC AD CARDIANI MUNUS EVECTO OPTIME DE LITTERIS QUAS SINGULARI EXCOLUIT INDUSTRIA ORATIONE LUCULENTER EXPLICAVIT OPTIME DE ALUMNIS QUOROM SIBI AMOREM ANIMO FERE PATERNO CONCILIAVIT OPTIME DE COLLEGIO IN QUO DISCIPLINÆ SEVERITATEM MORUM SUAVITATE BENE CONDITAM EXERCUIT NUNQUAM NON PROMERITO HOC PIETATIS ET REVERENTIÆ MONUMENTUM ACCEPTUM VOLUERUNT SOCII SCHOLARES COMMENSALES DIE XVI.
