containing 48 hand-tinted titled photographs mounted on gilt-edged cardboard, each page with hand-painted illuminations, gilt-tooled leather spine, album 40 by 32 by 4cm; photographs 20 by 25cm

Notes

Lieutenant General Sir Henry George Wakelyn Smith, 1st Baronet GCB, (1787-1860) known as Sir Harry Smith, was a notable English soldier and military commander in the British Army of the early 19th century. He was British general, governor of Cape Colony and high commissioner in South Africa from 1847 to 1852. The current owner's late husband's great great aunt was companion to Lady Smith on their visit to Japan.
