About this Item

2010 Shiraz
6 (1 x 6) 750ml

Eagles’ Nest is cradled in a secluded valley high up on the slopes of the historic Constantia mountain range, which forms part of the World Heritage Site, Table Mountain. The farm’s origins can be traced back to 1836 when it was used as a refreshment station between the area now known as Wynberg in the east, and the harbour of Hout Bay in the west. In order to make this journey, travellers had to cross the mountain pass, now known as Constantia Neck.

In 1984, the 38ha farm was purchased by the Mylrea family. After devastating fires that raged through the Cape in the summer of 2000, the farm was mostly destroyed, except for the historic buildings. Being part of the world famous Constantia Valley, known for its award winning wines, they decided to plant the farm with varieties that best suited the unique terroir of Eagles’ Nest.

Critics Ratings

‘Multiple award winner. Glossy black cherries, smoked beef & black pepper in seductive 2010, its smoothly polished lines & resonating length hard to resist. French oak 16 months, half new. This is an iron fist in a velvet glove. 2009 (4.5 stars) showed more new oak.’ – Platter’s SA Wine Guide, 5*

‘The 2010 Shiraz underwent three or four pumpovers per day and sees 16 months in 15 months French oak. It has an engaging bouquet of brambly red fruit, raspberry and cranberry of briery that gently waft from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a crisp, almost leisurely opening with pure cranberry, sour cherry and pomegranate notes. This is so understated but carries so much finesse and class. By no means a powerful Shiraz, this just oozes refinement.’ – Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 93/100 (Oct 2013)

‘Matured for 16 months in French oak, 50% new, the wine demands your attention. Fantastic aromatics including red and black berries, a floral note, smoked meat, pepper and spice.  On the palate, there’s great depth of fruit, moderate acidity and fine tannins. Is it too dense and weighty? It certainly right on the edge but ultimately it’s not unbalanced – the complete package when it comes to New World Shiraz.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 92/100
