Notes
Over the years Preller titled works In the Beginning. These first works of the Old Testament indicate that he would do later versions of the theme, which indeed he did. In her preface to the catalogue of Preller’s 1972 Exhibition at The Pretoria Art Gallery Esmé Berman writes, “In the beginning … Alexis Preller was a dreamy boy who grew up in Pretoria, played amid the grasses of the veld and watched the faces and the forms around him. Then, from his experience, his observations, and his inner psyche, he extracted forms and shapes and colours and composed a vision that is conceptually original, artistically unique among the works of cultural expression that his country has produced.”1
