Notes
“As a Durbanite, [Sénèque] made several sketches, graphic works and paintings of boats and the harbour, as well as landscapes of the area. However, I am most impressed by the Alpine paintings he made during his honeymoon in France. The confident brushwork in our painting Dorpie aan die Voet van die Alpe (lot 231) struck me immediately. No fiddling with the brush. And one gets the impression that he spontaneously chose the right colours to set the atmosphere. Also, the overwhelming massiveness of the mountain against the houses below – amazing perspectives that make me feel that he sensed the insignificance of the inhabitants who do not appear anywhere. I can say the same about Alpedorpie (lot 232), which he painted on the same occasion – smaller but just as grand. Different colours, different atmosphere, but just as impressive, I think, with the same pleasure. Which I especially appreciate because I have never been there, and probably never will.” —Dr Matthys J Strydom, 2021
