"The Homunculus video series combines footage from my extensive video archive with selected sections of Goethe’s closet play, Faust II (1832). Homunculus, a key character in Goethe’s play, narrates this series and is defined as an artificial miniature human being. I argue that the artificial environment and vastness of the city turn us into miniaturised urban cyborgs. Furthermore, sequential editing techniques along with certain digital effects are used to convey my experience of various urban environments. This experience is characterised by both the material and immaterial aspects of the city that manifest as multiple streams of information." –Heinrich Minnie
Heinrich Minnie was born in Middelburg, Mpumalanga in 1991 and now lives and works in Cape Town. He completed a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art (2014) and a Master of Fine Art (2020) at the University of Cape Town. He has exhibited at various galleries and institutions including Brundyn+, the AVA, Zeitz MOCAA, and Stevenson. His practice often involves exploring the topics of urbanisation and digitisation through video and installation.
