Notes

Bientang's cave is a natural rock shelter close to the Old Harbour in Hermanus. It is named after a Koi Strandloper who lived in the cave at the end of the 19th century. She survived on the rich resources of seafood in the area and the fresh water stream that trickled down the rock next to the entrance to the cave. Nowadays the shelter is occupied by the 'Bientang's Cave' restaurant.

A sketch of the same scene as the present lot appears in one of the artist's sketchbooks (Collection Stephan and Carmen Welz).

A Certificate of Authenticity from Strachan's Fine Art accompanies the lot (artwork titled 'Seetoneel').
