About this Item
William Timlin
The Ship that Sailed to Mars
A fantasy, written and illustrated by the author, first edition, published by George G. Harrap, London, undated (issued 1923), with 48 colour plates and 48 pages of calligraphic text each mounted on matt grey paper 1/4 white vellum binding with gilt decoration and title on spine, between grey paper-covered boards, title embossed on front board.
Notes
The quality and charm of Timlin's illustrations rival other 'golden age' illustrators such as Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac.
"The most original and beautiful children's book of the 1920s ... a magical combination of science fiction and fairyland"1
1. Richard Dalby (1991) The Golden Age of Children's Book Illustration, London, Michael O'Mara Books, page 102.
