About this Item
Duncan Savage, a trailblazing winemaker, produces some of SA’s most sought-after wines. They are something of a contradiction; ‘savage’ in their essence of minimal intervention winemaking, but utterly sophisticated in their elegance, drinkability and poise. Every year his following grows, with some of these wines reaching a cult-like status. He sources grapes from across the Western Cape winelands and his cellars are based in Salt River.
The Follow the Line red from Duncan Savage has almost certainly become one of the most highly respected old vine Cinsault reds in South Africa. The fruit comes from 40-year-old dry farmed bush vines in Darling, grown on decomposed granite soils.

Critics Ratings
‘Powerful, dark, savoury. Dark fruit, dry but fine tannic texture, embyonic. Charry dry fresh finish. No prisoners; great potential.’ - Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17+/20 (Oct 2016)
'Restrained, linear 2015 from very low-yielding 0.6 ha single vineyard on Polkadraai Hills. Understated power & elegance, with exotic kiwi, pineapple & ginger complexity mingling with deft touch oak spice (10 months, 50% new).' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2015, 5* (97/100)
‘Bright, moderately saturated red. Subtle perfume of raspberry, red cherry and herbs. Lovely light touch and inner-mouth perfume to its red cherry, tart red berry and spice flavors. Boasts lovely lift and finishing grip but this is not at all a fleshy style. Still, it shows a bit more intensity and length than the Girl Next Door Syrah, as well as a saline complexity.’ - Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 93/100 (Mar 2017)
‘This has lovely persistent perfume from start to finish, with rooibos tea and bergamot aromas gliding over the core of bitter cherry and damson plum fruit. The finish picks up a light shiso leaf edge, while silky tannins let everything drape beautifully. Cinsault, Grenache and Syrah. Drink now through 2021.’ - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 92/100 (Feb 2017)
‘The 2015 Follow The Line is 58% Cinsault with Grenache and Syrah, including around 30% whole cluster fruit, mostly picked earlier. It has a reticent bouquet at first, gradually unfurling with blackberry leaf, cranberry and black pepper aromas, developing subtle garrigue scents with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple red berry fruit, caressing in the mouth, not powerful but very well balanced with peppercorns and undergrowth towards the finish.’ - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 91/100 (Apr 2017)
