About this Item
Hospices de Beaune is a former charitable almshouse founded in 1443 in the town of Beaune. It is now a modern hospital, with the original buildings serving as a museum. Since 1859, a charity wine auction has raised funds for the hospital with the wines produced being released under the Hospice's umbrella label. The auction features multiple barrels of 45 cuvées, blended from sites spanning 60ha, principally in the Côte de Beaune, the majority premier and grand cru.
This magnificent parcel of Grand Cru was offered to the Hospices in 1976 by Jean Collignon and named in memory of his mother. It is found at the heart of the hillside in the Mazis Hauts, on the same slope as the Chambertin Clos de Bèze, a neighbouring parcel. More than two thirds of the Cuvee come from old vines planted in 1947. This no doubt contributes to the remarkable density of the wine, to the silkiness of its tannins, as well as its length on the palate, which is regularly exceptional.
Producer tasting notes: 'The intense raspberry and red fruits spreads dramatically across the whole palate, with very fine-grained tannins and just enough pleasing acidity to provide the counterpoint. It leaves a glow of pure yet intense red fruit suffusing the palate. Magical persistence, probably enjoyable quite early, but definitely capable of lasting for the long term.'
Provenance
The Coats Family Cellar is arguably the most prestigious fine wine collection ever offered in South Africa. It contains a deep collection of the worlds finest, most sought-after wines, spanning over 150 years. Collected over many decades, the cellar was imported from Ireland to South Africa via reefer. Each bottle within the Coats Family Cellar was authenticated by Michael Egan in August 2022 and given an ID number for tracking.
Michael Egan is a world-expert in fine and rare wines with more than thirty five years of experience. He was the principal expert for the plaintiff in the two major wine counterfeiting trials in Koch v. Eric Greenberg and United States v. Rudy Kurniawan, both of which occurred in 2013.
Along with Michael Egan, the Strauss & Co Fine Wine team have tasted extensively through the cellar and are confident of the wine storage and hence quality. The entire collection is currently stored at Wine Cellar.
Critics Ratings
‘Lightish ruby. Sweet red fruits still quite primary on the nose. Dry texture but elegant and balanced. Sour-cherry freshness on the finish, long and all still in harmony.’ – Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Jul 2017)
