About this Item
Domaine Jacques Prieur is a relatively large Burgundy producer that makes both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from esteemed vineyard holdings across the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. The history of the domaine began in the 1860s, with the marriage of Claude Duvergey and Marie Taboureau. They first established the wine and spirits merchant business, Duvergey-Taboureau House, before buying property in Meursault – now the site of the modern Jacques Priuer daomine. Beginning in the late 1800s and continuing into the 20th Century, the family began investing in viticulture and purchasing vineyards, establishing vines in what have become some of the most sought after appellations in the Côte d'Or.
Provenance
The Coats Family Cellar is arguably the most prestigious fine wine collection ever offered in South Africa. It contains a deep collection of the worlds finest, most sought-after wines, spanning over 150 years. Collected over many decades, the cellar was imported from Ireland to South Africa via reefer. Each bottle within the Coats Family Cellar was authenticated by Michael Egan in August 2022 and given an ID number for tracking.
Michael Egan is a world-expert in fine and rare wines with more than thirty five years of experience. He was the principal expert for the plaintiff in the two major wine counterfeiting trials in Koch v. Eric Greenberg and United States v. Rudy Kurniawan, both of which occurred in 2013.
Along with Michael Egan, the Strauss & Co Fine Wine team have tasted extensively through the cellar and are confident of the wine storage and hence quality. The entire collection is currently stored at Wine Cellar.
Critics Ratings
‘The 2012 Montrachet Grand Cru comes from their 0.5863-hectares (to be exact) of vine, one plot located in the middle of the vineyard and one above located on the terrace. The bouquet takes a little while to start motoring, eventually unfolding to reveal scents of fresh lime, green apple, wet limestone and sea spray. The palate is well balanced with a slight viscous texture on the spicy, rich opening. There is plenty of depth here, with lightly honeyed fruit and that spicy leitmotif becoming more pronounced towards the finish. I can appreciate the persistency and a long saline aftertaste – superb.’ – Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 92-94/100 (Dec 2013)
‘There is enough reduction to reduce the expressiveness of the nose yet curiously it still seems both fresh and ripe. There is outstanding size, weight and richness to the full-bodied and seductively textured flavors that brim with palate coating dry extract before culminating in a superbly long and solidly complex finish. This is not an especially big wine by the standards of the typical Montrachet but the focus and power that one expects are certainly present.’ – Allen Meadows, Burghound.com, 91-94/100 (Jun 2014)
‘More open and forward than usual with subtle flavours of minerals, toasted nuts and jasmine flowers. Silky, elegant and very long. Lovely.’ - Jeannie Cho Lee MW, Decanter.com, 94/100 (Jan 2015)
‘Straw-yellow color. Highly nuanced aromas of peach, menthol, botanical herbs and crushed stone suggest a powerful wine. Then hugely rich and densely packed, with strong saline minerality giving this superconcentrated big boy a chewy, savory quality. There's a high-pitched oak element here that does not dominate the wine's other elements. Still tight on the very long aftertaste but already saturates the palate with stone fruit and mineral flavors.’ – Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 93/100 (Sep 2014)
