About this Item
Jacques Selosse Estate is a highly regarded Champagne house. It is known for its Substance cuvée, and its use of a solera system dating back to 1986, a technique more commonly associated with Sherry.
The estate was set up in the 1950s by Jacques Selosse, who sold a large portion of his grapes to Champagne Lanson. However, the house gained the most fame from his son Anselme Selosse, who took over the running of the estate in 1980. Selosse improved quality, reducing yields and converting the vineyards to organic viticulture. He also began to carefully consider the terroir of the vineyard holdings, particularly in the grand cru villages Avize, Cramant and Oger. Today, he is known for being one of the first to champion terroir in Champagne.
Provenance
The Coats Family Cellar is arguably the most prestigious fine wine collection ever offered in South Africa. It contains a deep collection of the worlds finest, most sought-after wines, spanning over 150 years. Collected over many decades, the cellar was imported from Ireland to South Africa via reefer. Each bottle within the Coats Family Cellar was authenticated by Michael Egan in August 2022 and given an ID number for tracking.
Michael Egan is a world-expert in fine and rare wines with more than thirty five years of experience. He was the principal expert for the plaintiff in the two major wine counterfeiting trials in Koch v. Eric Greenberg and United States v. Rudy Kurniawan, both of which occurred in 2013.
Along with Michael Egan, the Strauss & Co Fine Wine team have tasted extensively through the cellar and are confident of the wine storage and hence quality. The entire collection is currently stored at Wine Cellar.
Critics Ratings
‘Selosse's 2005 Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Millésime displays a golden-yellow color followed by a very intense yet super pure and terroir-driven bouquet with rich, beautifully evolved ripe fruit aromas along with chalky and iodine notes. Likewise, the palate features richness and intensity combined with iodine purity and terrible freshness (dosage: 1.3 grams per liter). This lovely, oxidative 2005 reveals tremendous finesse and elegance and finishes with great intensity, length and complexity. Very fine mousse.’ – Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, 95/100 (Aug 2018)
‘A wine of cool sophistication and finesse, the 2005 Millesime is simply superb today and more expressive than it was when I last tasted it, about a year ago. An exotic mélange of citrus, lemon confit and floral notes infuses the 2005, a rich, deep Champagne loaded with class and personality. Even with all of its intensity, the 2005 remains light on its feet and gracious to the core. The Millesime is a blend of fruit from the Chantereines Les Maladries du Midi lieu-dits, both in Avize. Disgorged November 2015. Dosage is 1.3 grams per liter.’ – Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 97/100 (Mar 2016)
