Notes

"I used the tree as a metaphor to represent the Bishop. Trees can grow to become a source of food and provide shelter/protection to many living things. In the image, I use an illustration-like style of drawing to depict how the Bishop is a pillar of our society. He contributed to building the current South Africa, where kids are born free to be whoever and whatever they want to be. Different scenes are hidden in the tree and the background. I used bright colour washes over the printed image which reminds me of old illustrated children's book images which used to bring me a lot of joy as a kid."–Thabo Skhosana

Thabo Skhosana was born on the East Rand in 1996. He is currently enrolled in the Senior Graduate Programme at Artist Proof Studio. Having learned many different printing mediums, he has specialized in linocut, etching, and combination printing with colour monotypes. Skhosana has always had a love for art, particularly drawing from an early age. He was inspired by the animation and comic books that his father would give to him. Skhosana has exhibited with the Artist Proof Studio in collaboration with Strauss & Co at the Turbine Art Fair (2018/19), the Legacy exhibition (2019) as well as at the recent Joburg Art Fair.

Proceeds from the sale of this lot will go to the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation.
