About this Item
Complex, elegant and long-ageing, the wines of Domaine Marquis d'Angerville in Volnay are testament to one of the great domaines in Burgundy. From 1952 until his death in 2003, Jacques d’Angerville made his family domaine the flag bearer of Volnay. As Allen Meadows writes, his winemaking methods were ‘minimalist in the extreme’. A non-interventionist winemaker, as his father before him, Jacques allowed the domaine’s fine terroirs to be fully expressed in his wines. Rather putting his efforts into the vines, he trusted in great parcels and old vines of a unique clone, ‘Pinot d’Angerville’. The domaine holds four Crus: Fremiets, on the border or Pommard, Champans, Taillepieds, and the great d’Angerville monopole Clos des Ducs. Very littles has changed since Guillaume d’Angerville took over from his father in 2003. His wines possess the magic from his father’s legacy and, today, the demand for d’Angerville cuvées might even be greater than in Jacques’ day.

Marquis D’Angerville 1er Cru Volnay Taillepieds 1999
‘After 16 years this beauty has finally started to open after being notably shut down for many years. The wonderfully elegant, pure and ripe nose reflects notes of spicy and earthy red and dark berry fruit that merges seamlessly into dense and intense medium weight flavors that brim with minerality on the strikingly long finish. This is a classic Taillepieds that is still on the way up though I underscore that it's no longer quite so far away that it cannot be enjoyed now. That said, for my taste patience continues to be required and based on a bottle out of my own cellar as well as another recent bottle tasted in Burgundy, I won't touch another bottle for another 4 to 5 years.’ - Allen Meadows, Burghound.com, 93/100 (Oct 2015)
Marquis D’Angerville 1er Cru Volnay Clos des Ducs Monopole 2002
‘Even after 15 years this remains almost as primary as when it was bottled as the color is still deep ruby and there are no secondary hints in evidence on the elegant and pure red berry fruit and stone-infused nose. The detailed, intense and strongly mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors possess a sophisticated mouth feel while coating the palate with dry extract. There is a noticeably firm acid spine on the moderately austere and gorgeously persistent finish. This is a distinctly understated vintage for Clos des Ducs that seems to be evolving at a glacially slow pace. Tasted thrice recently with similar notes.’ - Allen Meadows, Burghound.com, 93/100 (Mar 2017)
