About this Item
Veenwouden is a Boutique Winery situated on the northern side of Paarl with sweeping views of the Klein Drakenstein Mountains. Once a family affair, Deon Van der Walt was the owner at the time, Switzerland-based tenor, whilst brother Marcel was the winemaker and previously a professional golfer. The first vineyards being planted in 1989 and by 1993 they released their Bordeaux styled reds. These wines emerged from no-where to capture international attention and are some of the most consistent vintage wines found in SA. The Veenwouden wines are all in immaculate condition today and show a modernity that few SA wines achieved at the time. Truly special and extremely rare.

Critics Ratings
Bordeaux style blend Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot/Cabernet Franc/Malbec (50/35/12/3). 97 tracks the pattern of Merlot above with tender sweet ripeness, dark cherry, some chocolates and spices before firm, dryish finish; notch up (and deeper colour) than pvs. Many of the remarks above apply here too. Vinification, 2-yr. oak regime virtually identical, as are broad stylistic results of (uncontrived) passion, care in v’yd/fruit selection. Same low, intense yields; expensive new Nevers cooperage. These need at least 2-3 yrs. Before they start opening; should mature with interest for 9-12 yrs.’ – Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2000, 4.5*
