About this Item
Situated in the foothills of Stellenbosch's iconic Simonsberg Mountain and with a history dating back to 1771, Warwick Wine Estate was purchased in 1902 by a Commanding Officer of the Warwickshire regiment. He renamed the farm Warwick as a tribute to his regime. Warwick's terroir offers the perfect confluence of elements to grow grapes of consistently outstanding quality. In the cellar, careful vinification yields fine wines with true varietal character and an honest expression of their origin. Warwick deeply cherishes what nature has provided and is committed to protecting and nurturing the land for generations to come. They dedicate time and passion to ensuring quality in every facet of their craft.
Situated in the Stellenbosch region, with a history dating back to 1771, Warwick Wine Estate was purchased by a Commanding Officer of the Warwickshire regiment in 1902 and he renamed the farm Warwick as a tribute to his regiment. In 1964, Stan & Norma Ratcliffe started redeveloping the estate, through the planting of Bordeaux varieties with son, Mike Ratcliffe, eventually taking over the reins in 1999. He helped further propel the estate upwards and at the time of this vintage’s release they had ‘listings in 4 of the top 10 restaurants in the world’. In 2018 Warwick was acquired by Eileses Capital, a San Francisco investment firm.

'Warwick Wine Estate is one of the best-known South African estates based in Stellenbosch. Stan Ratcliffe purchased the estate in 1964 and immediately focused upon Cabernet Sauvignon, debuting the “Trilogy” with the 1986 vintage (see my report on ancient South Africa wines.) Cabernet still occupies just over 20-hectares of which one-quarter is under drip irrigation. The Cabernet is complemented by classic French grape varieties and 8-hectares of Pinotage. I tasted the wines both at the winery and in the UK.’ – Neal Martin, Wine Advocate 90/100 (2011)
‘Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Inky crimson. Fine dark fruit intensity on the nose, with Cab Franc leafy/minty character showing through in the aromas. Supple and satisfying, fine fruit purity and plenty of structure for a long life. Firm grip on the finish makes it even more mouthwatering.’ – Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com 17/20 (2012)
