About this Item

2006 Saint Émilion
1 (1 x 1) 750ml

Château Angélus is a Premier Grand Cru Classé A estate on south-facing slopes in Saint-Émilion, on the right bank of the Gironde in Bordeaux. The château was so named because of the presence of church bells that could be heard chiming from the original plots of vineyards, amplified by the natural amphitheater the hill of Saint-Émilion creates. In 1996, Château Angélus, which had been classified as a Grand Cru Classé in the Saint-Émilion Classification of 1954, was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé. In 2012, the château was promoted once again to the top rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé A.

Hubert de Boüard has increased his marketing campaigns to reintroduce the world to Château Angélus, especially after rising to the heights of Premier Grand Cru Classé A. It has become associated with the James Bond films, a 1982 vintage featuring in Casino Royale and a 2005 in Spectre. In 2016, de Boüard's daughter Stéphanie bought her father's shares in the property, becoming sole owner. Her father remains as a co-director.

Critics Ratings

‘The 2006 Château Angelus, a blend of 47% Cabernet Franc, 50% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, has a very perfumed bouquet with scents of blueberry, cassis, crushed violets and just a touch of mushroom. This is very generous. The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth, slightly toasty entry. The acidity is quite low compared to other 2006 Saint Émilions, but there is harmony here and the tannins seem very fine. There is real density on the finish, although I was just seeking a little more delineation to come through. Give this another two or three years in the bottle. Drink 2018-2032.’ - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 94/100 (May 2016)

‘This has a gorgeous nose of black licorice, black cherry and sage. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a very long finish. There is beautiful texture for the vintage. Enjoy the fruit and richness.’ - James Suckling, Wine Spectator, 93/100 (Mar 2009)
