Notes
"Dia!kwain was a prisoner from the Breakwater Convict Station who lived with the Bleek family in the 1870s. It is likely that he was the prisoner convicted of man-slaughter when he killed a farmer who threatened his family. It is told that on his return home he was murdered by the farmer's friends in revenge." Skotnes (1993), page 29.
"We know virtually nothing of Jan Plat, except that he was a prisoner at the Breakwater Convict Station during the 1870s – his crime, according to his testimony – he 'killed a sheep for hunger'" Skotnes (1993), page 26.
Literature
Pippa Skotnes (1993) In the Wake of the White Wagons, Cape Town: Standard Bank National Arts Festival, illustrated in colour on pages 26 and 29 respectively.
