Notes
Konrad Ludwig Lessing, a landscape painter, was born in Düsseldorf, Germany. He came from a family of artists, with his father Karl and brother Heinrich as painters, and his other brother Otto as a sculptor. Lessing was first taught art by his father, and later attended the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, Germany, where he studied under Hans Fredrik Gude and Anton von Werner. He then enrolled in the Berlin University of the Arts. In 1873, he had his first exhibition in Karlsruhe. Lessing traveled throughout Germany and its surrounds, especially to mountainous areas like the Eifel and Harz Mountains, in search of landscapes to capture. In 1896 he received a gold medal at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition. Lessing’s works are known for their romantic and atmospheric qualities.
