About this Item
Boekenhoutskloof, located in the Franschhoek valley, was established in 1776 and gets its name 'Boekenhout' from an indigenous Beech tree. Boekenhoutskloof, managed by Marc Kent, describes themself as a Syrah specialist. Their efforts in conservation can be seen through initiatives they have taken-on in their farm and surrounding areas. They are also a founding member of the Franschhoek Mountain Conservancy.
- Arguably one of SA’s rarest wines, The Journeyman is the pinnacle of Marc Kent’s winemaking vision and one of SA’s true cult wines. Made only in exceptional vintages, the 2005 was the first maiden release and sold out in a flash.
- Usually Cabernet Franc led, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. It was named after Marc Kent’s cockney grandfather, who was described as ‘The Journeyman’ on his father’s birth certificate, this wine is a personal expression that celebrates the unique and the individual.
- ‘Over time, Boekenhoutskloof has established that Cabernet Franc is the cultivar best suited to the terroir of our property in the furthest corner of the beautiful Franschhoek valley, with three top-performing blocks having been planted in 1994 and 1995. The remainder of the grapes comes from a 23-year old Merlot block, also on Boekenhoutskloof’. - Winemaker

Critics Ratings
‘Sold exclusively from the winery or used as gifts by the producer, the top-tier Bordeaux blend consists of predominantly Cabernet Franc with a splashing of Merlot. Herbatious and earthy, as one would expect from the varietal mix, but then also incredibly powerful and dense, with pencil lead and cacao on the palate. Within all the structure (mostly unmoved in 2020) and concentration there is elegance and refinement of tannins and superb length. One of the wines that give personality to the sentiment of SA’s best reds being poised between old-world classicism and new world fruit boldness.’ – Higgo Jacobs 2020, 96/100
‘Only ever available at the winery, and then only as a gift to special customers, this blend of Cabernet Franc with 10% Merlot is the first release since 2011. And what a release it is: right up there with the best Bordeaux blends in the Cape - grassy, refined and elegant, with scented oak and the kind of tannins that Cheval Blanc would be proud of. Drink 2019-30.’ – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2017, 97/100
