About this Item
signed; inscribed with the title on a plaque adhered to the frame
Notes
The title on the plaque is incorrect, it should more correctly be 'Victoria Road'.
Born in Amsterdam in 1885, De Jongh and his family immigrated to South Africa in 1921 and settled in the Cape, where he created his acclaimed landscape paintings of Cape Town and the Cederberg. The strong South African sunshine encouraged the self-taught artist to abandon his early more muted palette in the Dutch tradition in favour of more saturated colours.
The present lot depicts Victoria Road which runs above the beaches at Clifton, with the Twelve Apostles mountain range on the left, linking Sea Point with Camps Bay. Completed in 1887 this road was named Victoria in honour of the Queen’s Jubilee the following year.
