About this Item

2011 Pauillac
1 (1 x 1) 750ml

Château Mouton Rothschild is not only one of the finest Bordeaux wines, but it is also one of the world’s greatest. The First Growth from Pauillac holds an incredible track record for the most consistent and long-lived wines in all of Bordeaux. It can be argued that the modern age of Chateau Mouton Rothschild arose along with the modernization of the entire Bordeaux wine region.

Each year since 1945, the Château Mouton Rothschild label has been illustrated with an artwork by a leading painter, specially created for the vintage. Thus, the most famous names in contemporary painting have been brought together in a collection to which a new work is added each year. From one label to another, Mouton Rothschild has thus brought together some of the most celebrated artists of their day, including Miró, Chagall, Braque, Picasso, Tàpies, Francis Bacon, Dali, Balthus, Jeff Koons and even Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales. The artists have complete freedom of creation, though certain themes, such as the vine, the pleasure of drinking and the ram, the Mouton Rothschild emblem, have proved a particularly rich source of inspiration.

The commission to illustrate the 2011 vintage was given by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild to the French painter and sculptor Guy de Rougemont, born in 1935 and a member of the Academy of Fine Arts of the Institut de France.

Fond of bright, warm colours, which he initially used in regular geometrical forms, he subsequently turned to the “serpentine line”, whose undulations emphasise or temper contrasts of light and shade. His drawing for Mouton Rothschild 2011 belongs to this second manner: from gold to dark red, from the clarity of vines in sunshine to the darkness of the cellars, Rougemont takes us in colour through all the stages of the birth of a great wine.

Critics Ratings

‘Brings together the florality of Armailhac and the dense fruit of Clerc Milon, all with the volume turned up. Clear concentration and structure here, powerful Pauillac tannins and a juicy finish - easily one of the wines of the vintage in Pauillac. And despite the challenges of the vintage, it has plenty of seductive Mouton signature - touches of gourmet edging, smoke, liquorice, bitter chocolate shavings, pencil lead, a ton of Pauillac character. It is well measured and grips through the palate. Harvest 12-28 September. Drinking window: 2023 - 2050.’ - Jane Anson, Decanter.com, 97/100 (Feb 2021)

‘There is a lightness about this vintage of Mouton Rothschild. It doesn't take away from its quality but does give the wine poise and an attractive lift. The wine is based on solid tannins, then the ripe fruit builds layers of fruitiness and freshness. It is not likely to be one of the longest-aging Moutons, but it will be delicious. Drink from 2020.’ - Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, 95/100 (May 2014)
