About this Item

2001 Baron Edmund
6 (1 x 6) 750ml

Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons was established in 1997 under the leadership of Dr. Anton Rupert and Baron Edmond de Rothschild. The men later handed over the reins to their respective sons: Anthonij Rupert and Baron Benjamin de Rothschild. Few SA wine brands have been able to penetrate the premium global market quite like R&R with their distinctive Bordeaux-style blends from the Cape.

Critics Ratings

‘Pedigreed flagship; more opulent, ageworthy than Classique. Same 66/34 Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blend as previous; solid ruby, oak nicely packed with light, fleshy feel, uncomplicated plummy, toffee sweetness. 2001 temporarily tightened up, less expressive than a year ago (open well in advance if drinking now). Sound structure, fruit richness for evolution over next 3-7 years.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2005, 4.5*

‘Good medium ruby-red. Very pretty, aromatic nose of currant and flowers. Sweet, youthfully tight and sharply delineated, with lovely harmonious acidity giving the fruit a light touch. Perhaps less dense than the 2000 but with more inner-palate energy and Cabernet nobility. Finishes with superb, youthful fruit and building tannins. A second bottle, sampled just before press time, offered terrific palate-saturating density but was going into a shell, with the tannins gaining the upper hand. I would forget about this wine for at least three or four years.’ - Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 91+/100 (Mar 2005)
