About this Item
Founded in 1682, Rustenberg Estate on the Simonsberg foothills is one of the most historic and picturesque farms in South Africa. The farm was previously split into two estates, until 1945 when industrialist Peter Barlow purchased both farms and reunited them. Rustenberg is family-owned with son of Peter Barlow, Simon, owning the estate and grandson, Murray (2 x Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year) now cellar master.
Their flagship wine is named after Peter Barlow and is a site-specific 100% Cabernet Sauvignon high up on the Simonsberg. It is the oldest vineyard on the estate.

‘A flagship, all Cabernet Sauvignon, as handsome as its Simonsberg origin. Meticulous focus from grape (multiple prunings, bunches individually tagged at start of each growing season, stringent bunch/berry selection during harvest) to cellar. 2002’s bold, strong (15% alcohol) canvas for ripe blackberry fruit held back from ungainly opulence by fine tannins.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2005, 4.5*
‘All estate Cabernet. Deep ruby-red. Flamboyant, enticing aromas of blackberry, currant and exotic spices, complicated by chocolate, leather, mint and a floral top note. Rich, sweet and highly concentrated, with an almost candied edge to the flavours of currant, plum, herbs and eucalyptus. Finishes firmly tannic and very long. Shows better mid-palate depth than the John X Merriman, not to mention lovely lift. A great performance for the vintage, and in need of four or five years of cellaring to fully express itself.’ - Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, 91+/100 (Mar 2005)
