Notes
London-born Robert Hodgins immigrated to South Africa in 1938. He enlisted with the Union Defence Force in 1940, and served in Kenya and Egypt. In 1944 he returned to London where he studied art and education at Goldsmiths and received an arts and crafts certificate in 1951 and a National Diploma of Design in painting in 1953. He returned to South Africa where he continued to teach at numerous tertiary institutions before finally retiring in 1983 to paint full-time.
Hodgins’ innately wicked sense of humour, keen sense of observation and commentary is clearly seen in his work. Possessing a mischievous and curious eye with which he critically evaluates the doings of humankind, a lively wit, the sensitivity to include himself in his impressions of our species, and a healthy cynicism, Hodgins' compositions are both visually appealing and acerbically astute.
