Notes

London-born Jake Aikman moved to Cape Town where he received a Bachelor of Fine Art, and Masters of Fine Art, from the Michaelis School of Fine Art, Cape Town.
Aikman plays with scale, focus and repetition to produce paintings that evoke a sense of longing, isolation and nostalgia. His work often delves into contexts obscured by natural phenomena. Vast seascapes typify his oeuvre, where calm surfaces allude to potential danger that may lie beneath.
Jake Aikman has participated in several local and international, group and solo exhibitions. In 2009 he was selected to participate in the major exhibition, L'Anima Del Acqua: The Spirit of Water, sponsored by the Italian government and presented at the Ca' d'Oro Palace as part of the 53rd Venice Biennale. Locally, SMAC Art Gallery hosted his first major solo exhibition and Aikman recently completed his third successful solo exhibition with SMAC Art Gallery. This recent exhibition saw Aikman continue with his iconic seascapes, while embarking in a different direction with a new series depicting remote coastlines and dense forests.
