About this Item
Notes
Johannes Maswanganyi was born in Msengi Village, near Giyani, and learned carving techniques from his father. He began his career carving medicine gourds for traditional healers, but then added sculptures to his repertoire. He has been one of the most consistent of the sculptors from Limpopo in his output and his presence on the art scene.
This ambitious work, an ensemble of two figures on a base, represents Sangomas (traditional healers) making music, presumably by singing. One figure has detailed, carved clothing, necklaces, bracelets and anklets, but the second, seated figure, has an actual beaded cloth wrap-skirt (siyandana) and a real beaded necklace, heightening its realism. Maswanganyi has used enamel paint to emulate beaded surfaces on the carved clothing, and to give the effect of ochre on their carved hair. The rigid seated figure has closed eyes and appears to be entering a state of altered consciousness, while the dancing figure is carved with great energy and movement.
