Notes
After graduating from the Michaelis School of Fine Arts with an MA in 2007, Nandipha Mntambo won the prestigious Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Visual Art in 2011. She has held key solo exhibitions in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Stockholm and her works have been part of internationally acclaimed group exhibitions, the latest being Simon Njami’s The Divine Comedy: Heaven, Purgatory and Hell Revisited by Contemporary African Artists (currently on display at the Museum of African Art, Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, Washington, DC). She will also participate in the 2015 Venice Biennale.
Mntambo works in a range of media, focusing on the notion of the female body, its corporeal presence, sexuality and vulnerability. Often working with cowhide, Mntambo’s works reverse and subvert more commonly encountered representations of female bodies. The Hinterland of Devotion prints are equally inspired by notions of body, hide and skin. They were inspired by a close up and intimate focus on body parts. The technique used to create these images, through adding layer upon layer of ink, reflects the physical structure of skin.
