Notes

In Marcus Neustetter’s Cave Lines, energetic and broad brush strokes of black and ochre ink drip down the expanse of white paper. Painted lines tangle and overlap producing irregular translucent and opaque bands. Made following a residency at Nirox Foundation in the Cradle of Humankind, the work is, in Neustetter’s words, an ‘act of sensitive and intensive observation’. Cave Lines is both a trace and a layering of the outlines of cave openings observed at the site simulating ‘a site-specific portal’ into archaeological spaces discovered and unknown. Operating at the intersections of art and science, Neustetter has worked directly with archaeologists and astronomers in his work to broaden his understanding of the complexities of time and space. Neustetter has produced numerous projects for gallery, public and virtual spaces internationally. He also partners with the artist Stephen Hobbs in Trinity Session, a contemporary art production team that explores relationships between art, business, collaborative practice and network development.
