About this Item
Sons of Sugarland wines are produced by Young Gun, Reenen Borman of Boschkloof and Patasfontein wines. Reenen is possibly our finest new-generation winemaker at present and his latest releases are just epic. Reenen's accomplished hand and ever-increasing skills are especially impressive considering his young age. Sons of Sugarland is known for it's sought-after Syrah, with the Barbera being a new addition to the label.
This unique wine is made from an old single vineyard situated 250m above sea level in the Polkadraai Hills of Stellenbosch. This area is renowned for its amazing granite soils. Today it is one of South Africa’s greatest Syrah’s.
The 100% whole-bunch fruit is from the same single vineyard as the Boschkloof Epilogue and made by the same winemaker – Reenen Borman. It is a single clone Syrah SH99, whereas Boschkloof is a blend of two clones. However, the Sons of Sugarland falls under the Ron Burgundy Wines umbrella (like the Patatsfontein Chenin Blanc and Patatsblanc Colombard/Chenin Blanc), a three-way joint venture between Reenen Borman, Henk Kotze and Fritz Schoon.
Winemaker's personal tasting note:'Very northern Rhone in style with fragrant blue fruit and black pepper spice. Beautifully balanced on the palate with ripe, concentrated fruit, soft tannins and a long savoury finish.' - Reenen Borman

Critics Ratings
'Bunch press, natural ferment, older oak, as all these. Complex & involving 2016 follows stellar 2015 (5 stars, 95 pts); blueberry toned, whiffs of fennel, liquorice, white pepper, a silky texture, the list goes on. Not to be hurried. WO Stellenbosch.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2018, 4.5* (94/100)
'Lovers of northern Rhône Syrah fermented with whole bunches will adore the second release of this brilliant red from Reenen Borman and two friends. Floral and juicy, with tapenade and violet aromas, silky tannins and scented blackberry fruit, it’s the Alain Graillot Crozes- Hermitage of Stellenbosch. 2018-23' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2017, 93/100
'Pure northern Rhône nose. Really very sinewy and fresh with that tarry verging-on-black-pepper quality. Great balance! Exciting wine.' - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17/20 (Oct 2017)
