About this Item

2017 Tin Soldier
6 (1 x 6) 750ml

Thorne & Daughters Wines was started in 2012 by John and Tasha Seccombe with the aim to produce authentic wines in the beautiful Western Cape. John works with grapes from all over the Cape and seems to have a particularly refined aesthetic when it comes to winemaking. His Thorne and Daughters family concern is truly pushing the boundaries with old vines and simple, natural winemaking.

All Thorne & Daughters wines take their names from archetypal children’s toys, and Tin Soldier takes its name from Semillon’s status as the old foot soldier of the South African industry. Much like the old toy soldiers buried in the garden, Semillon has been reduced to a mere shadow of its former glory days in the Cape.

Critics Ratings

‘From Swartland Semillon Gris fermented on the skins. Pale bronze in colour, the nose is not particularly aromatic but shows hints of red apple, fennel and spice plus a little reduction. Light, fresh and savoury on the palate – lovely texture without being weighty or greasy. An understated, very pleasing wine. Alcohol: 12.5%.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 93/100 (Jul 2018)

‘Now sourced entirely from one grower in the Swartland, this is a vineyard-based mix of Semillons Gris and Blanc. Naturally fermented with no added sulphur dioxide, it’s a South African take on a traditional Georgian white, showing phenolics, vinosity and texture and flavours of quince and wild herbs. 2018-23’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2018, 95/100

‘The less expressive of the 2 semillons, from the red-skinned version: 7-10 days on skins gives old-gold colour. 2017 all about elegance, refinement, tension. Fine powdery tannin suggestion, deeply satisfying pervasive acidic thread. 12.7% alcohol - a touch riper than 2016 (4 stars, 89 pts).’ - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2019, 4.5* (92/100)
