About this Item
Thorne & Daughters Wines was started in 2012 by John and Tasha Seccombe with the aim to produce authentic wines in the beautiful Western Cape. John works with grapes from all over the Cape and seems to have a particularly refined aesthetic when it comes to winemaking. His Thorne and Daughters family concern is truly pushing the boundaries with old vines and simple, natural winemaking.
All Thorne & Daughters wines take their names from archetypal children’s toys, and Tin Soldier takes its name from Semillon’s status as the old foot soldier of the South African industry. Much like the old toy soldiers buried in the garden, Semillon has been reduced to a mere shadow of its former glory days in the Cape.

Critics Ratings
‘Tin Soldier is made entirely from Semillon Gris - not much of that to go around in the Cape - and spends a week on its skins, Friuli-style. This is a white for red wine lovers, with some tannic backbone, herbal, savoury, mineral-edged fruit flavours and lovely pastry and kitchen spice rack notes. 2018-23.’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2017, 94/100
'Predominantly Semillon Gris and some Semillon from the Swartland. Fermented on the skins for around 10 days. Potpourri, peach, orange and spice on the nose. Again rich and broad on the palate with moderate acidity and a savoury finish. A particular wine – will no doubt only increase its cult following.' - Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 92/100 (May 2017)
