About this Item
At Brookdale, the Rudd family saw opportunity and potential in what was, at the time, an overgrown and under-used area of land in the Paarl Winelands. Tim Rudd, proprietor, acquired the property with a clear vision in mind to create a world-class country estate that encourages the freedom to be curious, to try new things, to test the limits and to pioneer new paths.
Brookdale Estate is the pinnacle of the Rudd family’s passions. Here, Mediterranean varietals, a unique Paarl terroir and unusual winemaking techniques are brought together under the visionary hand of owner, Tim Rudd, and winemaker, Kiara Scott. The first step in this vision – produce fine and interesting wine blends using unusual varietals in a South African context.

Critics Ratings
‘Maiden release is a Chenin Blanc 2017, vinification taking place in two 500-litre barrels, one new and the other used. Deep yellow in colour, the nose shows top notes of flowers and dried herbs before orange and yellow peach plus ginger and other spice while the palate is rich and full with tangy acidity and a savoury finish (alcohol: 13.5%). A swashbuckling debut.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 94/100 (Jun 2019)
‘Duncan Savage is the consultant for this English-owned Paarl Chenin Blanc, released as a stand-alone wine for the first time in 2017. Rich and leesy, with aromatic (50% new) wood, this has notes of brioche, pastry and stone fruit. 2018-22’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2018, 90/100
‘Blend of all the blocks, only 1000 bottles produced from 50% new oak (1 x new 500 litre and 1 x 10 year old 500 litre barrel). No malolactic, the ferment was much quicker than 2018 lasting 4 weeks. The nose shows dusty, earthy, savoury leesy notes of buttered warm baguette, vanilla spice and delicious yellow orchard fruits. Palate is already very expressive with explosive concentration of pineapple pastille, yellow peach, green apple and pithy citrus peel. The acids are bright and vibrant but finely balanced by a generous fleshy glycerol texture that is succinctly punctuated on the finish. An impressive debut.’ – Greg Sherwood MW, 93+/100 (May 2019)
‘The 2017 Brookdale Chenin Blanc, a new project with Duncan Savage overseeing replanted vineyard bought by the Rudd family, comes from granitic soils in Paarl and was matured in 50% first- and second-fill barrels with no malolactic. It has a lovely honeysuckle and white flower scented bouquet with touches of lemon curd and patisserie. The palate is well balanced with a light marine, oyster shell influence that permeates the spicy yellow plum and nectarine fruit.’ – Neal Martin, Vinous, 92/100 (Aug 2018)
