Critics Ratings

'Benefit of altitude, great climate on these Piekenierskloof grenache dryland vineyards clearly evident in 2018. Intensity, depth of wild strawberry, earthy tones; plenty of flesh attached to fresh, resilient tannins. Less ethereal than some previous, but acidity gives sense of cool energy.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2020, 5* (96/100)

'Lovely bright red fruited nose with red currant, crushed strawberry and bramble berry spice. Palate is glycerol, dense and super serious with stony tannins, graphite spice and a savoury red berry finish.' - Greg Sherwood MW, 95/100 (Jan 2023)

'The 2018 Soldaat is pure Grenache Noir from Piekenierskloof. It offers earthy red berry fruit on the nose, touches of wild heather and fynbos emerging with time and lending wonderful complexity. The palate is well balanced with a fleshy opening. There are layers of vibrant red cherry and strawberry fruit laced with white pepper and sage toward the persistent finish. Yet there is an approachability to this Soldaat that means it will be difficult to resist in its youth.' - Neal Martin, Vinous, 95/100 (Oct 2019)

'Soldaat is a high-altitude Piekenierskloof Grenache from a vineyard on sandstone and decomposed granite at 780 metres. Concrete fermented with 85% whole bunches, this is fresh, earthy and herbal, with delicate tannins, stony intensity and floral, delicate red cherry and redcurrant fruit. 2021-28' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 94/100

'From Piekenierskloof Grenache. A subtle and elusive nose - a hint of reduction before pomegranate, dried herbs, spice and earth. The palate is light-bodied and super-fresh with fine, powdery tannins.' - Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 92/100 (Jul 2019)
