Notes
The present lot is accompanied by the owners analysis of the artwork written in memory of her activist daughter.
District Six in Cape Town was a community destroyed during apartheid in the 1960s and 1970s. Today, a museum commemorates District Six, honoring the former vibrant community. The present lot captures joyous children dancing in the shadow of St. Paul's church, symbolising the innocence lost amid the destruction. The image challenges conventional associations of light and darkness, drawing parallels to themes in Shakespeare's works, particularly Othello, in redefining the symbolism of light and dark in the context of forced removal.
Provenance
Acquired from the artist by the current owner.
