About this Item

2011 Châteauneuf-du-Pape
5 (1 x 5) 750ml

One of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s key historical properties, Clos des Papes is a 40-hectare, organically-farmed domaine. Back in 1896, it was the very first Rhône producer to bottle and sell its own wines under its own label. Of the 40 hectares, 3 are planted to white varieties with 30 different parcels spread around the village. One of the parcels is planted near the Pope’s castle, surrounded by a wall, or ‘clos’, which inspired the name of the domaine. Current custodian, Paul-Vincent Avril is a passionate man who seeks balance, elegance and depth in his wines. At 16, Paul-Vincent left his family domaine to study around the world and complete internships, including a stint at Château Mouton-Rothschild, before returning home and taking over the reins.

Critics Ratings

‘Bricky ruby. There is a red-fruit succulence and perfume that is really pretty, even if behind it there is greater richness and spice. Really quite taut on the palate, with both tannins and freshness taking hold. There’s spice, a malty flavour and that fine, fruit-kernel bitterness that gives a fresh and lively length. Complex and textured and very long. A wine to spend the evening with. Beautifully balanced. Higher than usual percentage of Mourvèdre because it was so good in 2011.’ - Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, 18/100 (Dec 2017)

‘One of the stars of the vintage and coming from absurdly low yields of 18 hectoliters per hectare, the 2011 Chateauneuf-du-Pape is a full-bodied, seamless effort that exhibits copious kirsch, ground pepper, dried flowers and underbrush as well as incredibly fine tannin, great mid-palate concentration and ample length on the finish. Relatively forward by this estate’s standards, it will be approachable at an earlier age than normal. Nevertheless, it will have 20+ years of evolution and is an awesome effort in the vintage. Drink 2015-2030.’ - Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, 96/100 (Oct 2013)
