Notes

The present lot is a striking example of Dino Marten’s inventive and expressive style while at Aureliano Toso. It forms part of his Oriente series, which was noted for its amorphic shapes and mélange of techniques. In this vase, he has used murrine for the eyes and short rods of cane for the eyebrows, nose, and mouth, while the rest of the object is decorated with splashes of brightly coloured pigment. His bold and surprising designs often belie the careful effort and planning that Martens used to create his pieces.
