The Fairest Cape
About the SessionThe Cape Peninsula has been given many names throughout history. In 1488 Vasco da Gama named it the Cape of Storms and Prince Henry the Navigator gave it the name Cape of Good Hope. But it was the English Admiral, Sir Francis Drake, who gave this south-western most point of Africa the most appropriate name when he declared in 1579, “This Cape is a most stately thing, and the fairest Cape we saw in the whole circumference of the earth”.
These words still ring true today. The November auction has a large body of work devoted to this exceptional part of the world.

About this Item
twelve prints, each signed by the artist and numbered 23/50 in pencil in the margin
Notes
Twelve prints were made in homage to Cecil Skotnes by Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town.
Artists include William Kentridge, Willie Bester, David Brown, Norman Catherine, Peter Clarke, Stephen Inggs, David Koloane, Fritha Langerman, Louis Maqhubela, Malcolm Payne, Pippa Skotnes and Gavin Younge. Preface by John Skotnes.
"Cecil Skotnes believed that no one with talent should be denied the opportunity to train as an artist. Michaelis School of Fine Art established a scholarship in his name to honour his legacy. To this end twelve artists, each of whom were inspired by Skotnes in some way, have contributed work to the Homage portfolio. “I can think of no greater tribute than his peers participating in a project that will culminate in a scholarship that carries his name,” wrote John Skotnes, son of the artist, in the introduction."1
