Young Guns | For the classicists and the geeks alike, an incredible collection
About the SessionWhat is a Young Gun?
A talented winemaker who pushes the boundaries, breaks the rules and creates cutting-edge wines with personality and energy. Young Guns either work, or have worked for notable estates, but also produce unique wines under their own labels. They are dynamic, working together in pushing the envelope and promoting brand SA. They are the winemakers who should be on your radar as they are making some of the most daring, innovative, and simply delicious wines in SA. They travel and taste extensively, drawing inspiration from the classics through to the more edgy, hip styles and techniques, from the profound and obscure wine regions of the world. And then they apply their own creative interpretations on home soil, often searching for unique vineyard sites, cultivars and old vines. The results are most often small in numbers and high in demand, selling out on release. They are the rising stars, the future icons and ultimately, tomorrow’s investment wines.

About this Item
Metzer Family Wines was established in 2006. Winemaker and co-owner, Wade Metzer, has spent many years exploring the many facets of Syrah and Chenin Blanc, as both varieties lend themselves so naturally to minimalist winemaking. His passion for quality above else, means that all the wines in the range are not produced every year, rather ensuring that the wine behind their label is the best that can be produced. Their two single climate expressions of Chenin Blanc – Maritime and Montane – are highly acclaimed both locally and internationally.
Maritime (due to the vineyards proximity to False Bay). The vineyard is situated in the Firgrove area of Somerset West and is a mere 4km’s from the shores of False Bay. A single-vineyard wine from a bush vine parcel planted in 1980. The wine is heavily influenced by the cool south easter which blows in from the Bay.
Montane (due to the vineyards proximity to the Helderberg West Peak). The vineyard is situated on the lower slopes of the Helderberg West Peak. A single-vineyard wine from a bush vine parcel planted in 1964. The wine is heavily influenced by the clay rich soils which are prominent on the lower foothills of the Helderberg.

Maritime 2017
'Ex single 36 year old bushvine parcel just 4.5 km from the sea. 2017 as svelte as sibling, same natural winemaking but tighter, more athletic - saline? - profile (abetted by no lees stirring). Seasoned oak only, 8 months.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2019, 4.5* (93 pts)
‘Maritime hails from Firgrove and sits a mere four kilometres from the ocean. (It’s also the source of Mulderbosch’s W Block Chenin.) Picked early at the end of January, it’s a fresh, focused, saline white with some subtle white peach sweetness. 2018-23.’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2018, 93/100
Montane 2017
‘‘Chenin Blanc’ gets a prefix to highlight Helderberg foothills location of 50+ year old single vineyard site. Sensual 2017 has mouthfilling ripe tropical fruit in a supple, richly textured frame. As for striking 2016 (4.5 stars, 92 pts), lowish 13% alcohol, 10% new oak.’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2019, 5* (95 pts)
‘“With old vine fruit,” says Wade Metzer, “the less you do, the more the wine responds.” That’s certainly the case on this stunning Helderberg Chenin Blanc, sourced from a 1964 vineyard on decomposed granite soils. Picked late, it’s a taut, razor wire-precise white with incredible intensity and palate length. 2020-28.’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2018, 95/100
