Young Guns | For the classicists and the geeks alike, an incredible collection
About the SessionWhat is a Young Gun?
A talented winemaker who pushes the boundaries, breaks the rules and creates cutting-edge wines with personality and energy. Young Guns either work, or have worked for notable estates, but also produce unique wines under their own labels. They are dynamic, working together in pushing the envelope and promoting brand SA. They are the winemakers who should be on your radar as they are making some of the most daring, innovative, and simply delicious wines in SA. They travel and taste extensively, drawing inspiration from the classics through to the more edgy, hip styles and techniques, from the profound and obscure wine regions of the world. And then they apply their own creative interpretations on home soil, often searching for unique vineyard sites, cultivars and old vines. The results are most often small in numbers and high in demand, selling out on release. They are the rising stars, the future icons and ultimately, tomorrow’s investment wines.

About this Item
Inspired by travelling the world of wine and grapes, especially the ancient vineyards of the Old World; Momento Wines was born – “Wines that reflect all the elements involved: the sun, soil, water and earth – along with people, personalities, ideas and experiences.” Momento Wines are made and based in Bot River, a truly authentic and diverse region of South Africa, which Marelise Niemann has called her home since 2007. She is lucky enough to work with vines all over the Western Cape which are unique expressions of their regions and terroir.
Marelise Niemann's solo wine career started with Grenache. After just 3 weeks of working with ancient Grenache vineyards in Spain in 2010, Marelise was completely sold; actually, more like head over heels, utterly and ridiculously in love with this grape. Marelise bought her first parcel in 2011 and truly believes that Grenache to be one of South Africa’s most brilliant yet understated grapes.

Critics Ratings
‘Feisty yet focused and elegant, trademark Niemann power without force in beautiful 2017, perfumed rose, white pepper and buchu kept in line by lively acidity and tannic grip from extended skin contact. Ex Swartland and Voor Paardeberg, 30% wholebunch, 16 months in barrique.’ – Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2020, 4.5* (94 pts)
‘Some winemakers try to over extract their Grenache, but Marelise Niemann is not one of them. Made with grapes from the Paardeberg and (a minor component) the Voor Paardeberg, this is pale, fresh and intense, with savoury red cherry and raspberry flavours a hint of oak and clove and pepper spice from 30% whole bunches. 2022-26.’ – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 93/100
