Young Guns | For the classicists and the geeks alike, an incredible collection
About the SessionWhat is a Young Gun?
A talented winemaker who pushes the boundaries, breaks the rules and creates cutting-edge wines with personality and energy. Young Guns either work, or have worked for notable estates, but also produce unique wines under their own labels. They are dynamic, working together in pushing the envelope and promoting brand SA. They are the winemakers who should be on your radar as they are making some of the most daring, innovative, and simply delicious wines in SA. They travel and taste extensively, drawing inspiration from the classics through to the more edgy, hip styles and techniques, from the profound and obscure wine regions of the world. And then they apply their own creative interpretations on home soil, often searching for unique vineyard sites, cultivars and old vines. The results are most often small in numbers and high in demand, selling out on release. They are the rising stars, the future icons and ultimately, tomorrow’s investment wines.

About this Item
Sons of Sugarland wines are produced by Young Gun, Reenen Borman of Boschkloof and Patasfontein wines. Reenen is possibly our finest new-generation winemaker at present and his latest releases are just epic. Reenen's accomplished hand and ever-increasing skills are especially impressive considering his young age. Sons of Sugarland is known for it's sought-after Syrah, with the Barbera being a new addition to the label.
This unique wine is made from an old single vineyard situated 250m above sea level in the Polkadraai Hills of Stellenbosch. This area is renowned for its amazing granite soils. Today it is one of South Africa’s greatest Syrah’s.
THE ROAD TO GREATWOOD
Hooves bit into dust. The Sons of Sugarland were storming home. War, eight years of it, had made them hard. Their faces were tattered, and their hearts had little room for mercy, much for vengeance. At the outbreak of war, the brothers Finn led Greatwood's men of honor to the frontlines. But there were those who stayed behind, and time gave heed to the wicked. Cowards foolishly started plundering the innocent, thinking their spoil would come without recompense.
Women, cattle, corn, booze; nothing remained untouched by these yellowbellies. They showed no dread of justice. But news would reach the itchin' ears of the brothers Finn. Matters back home needed tending to, and justice was approaching like a desert storm. In memory of Huck, Roy & Frank Finn - The Sons of Sugarland.
Winemakers personal tasting note:
'Very northern Rhone in style with fragrant blue fruit and black pepper spice. Beautifully balanced on the palate with ripe, concentrated fruit, soft tannins and a long savoury finish.' - Reenen Borman

‘No oaking on outstanding, best-yet 2018 - just cement vessels for 11 months. From a single Polkadraai Hills vineyard. Pure and precise, almost ethereal, yet with a fine sensual richness of fruit and dry spice, and firm structure. Even more impressive than 2017 (4.5 stars, 94 pts).’ - Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2020, 5* (97pts)
'100% whole-bunch fermented and aged in concrete with no oak used at all, this 2018 Syrah is certainly a profound wine marked by its incredible perfume and aromatic complexity. Dark and inky in colour, the nose boasts seductive notes of violets, sweet jasmine, sappy crushed leaves, wood smoke and polished sandalwood that combine with promising aromas of asphalt, melted tar, black olives, cured meats and luscious black berry fruits. The palate is beautifully trim and toned with perfect proportions and silky, elegant savoury tannins that hark back to some of the finest Côte Rôties of the Northern Rhône. Medium bodied and seamlessly harmonious in texture, this wine finishes with notes of graphite, black currant herbal tea and crushed blueberries dusted with roughly ground black peppercorn spice. Classical Stellenbosch Syrah delivered with incredible precision, purity and subtlety. A true wine of beauty and thoroughly delicious. Drink now and over the next 8 to 10+ years.' - Greg Sherwood MW, A Fine Wine Safari, 96/100 (Jan 2020)
'If Epilogue is Reenen Borman's Hermitage, then Sons of Sugarland is his Crozes-Hermitage or Saint Joseph. Cement fermented and aged, with 100% whole bunches, it's a Syrah lover's Syrah, showing masses of colour, rosemary and thyme aromas, raspberry and blackberry fruit and wonderful energy and palate length. 2021-28.' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 93/100
